Stan was born and educated in St. John?s, Newfoundland and he was the son of James and Annie McGrath. Stan was a Veteran of World War II and joined the 59th Newfoundland Heavy Regiment as a teenager. He was Commissioned in the field at the ag e of 22 and saw action in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.Stan came to Moncton to live in 1945 shortly after receiving an Honourable Discharge from the Armed Forces. He was employed with London Live Insurance Company in 1952 and retire d in 1983 as District Sales Manager.Stan enjoyed the quality of life the city Moncton had to offer and he was an active community volunteer for over 50 years, serving on over thirty different committees and charitable organizations including; Pas t President of the Moncton Life Underwriters, Past President and on the Board of Directors for St. Patrick?s Family Centre, Past President of the New Brunswick Soccer Association and Past President for the Moncton Chapter of the MS Soc. Stan wa s also on the Board of Directors for the East End Boys & Girls Club, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Lions Senior Citizen Committee and on many other committees that included the Moncton Central Business Development Bureau, the Coliseu m Arena Committee, the Miss Moncton Pageant, the Bus Committee, Railroad Days, the Moncton Band Festival and the Moncton Santa Claus Parade. Stan had always shown a keen interest in Municipal politics and was elected to Moncton City Council in 19 80 as a Ward II Councilor and re-elected in 1983. He did not re-offer in 1986 but left the door open to return to politics again. He did so in 1989 and was elected as councilor -at-Large and re-elected in 1992 and in 1995. He also served as Depu ty Mayor for one term. For those who knew Stan he was a man known for his honesty, fairness, sincerity, dedication and accountability. |
