Gilbert moved to Chipman from Saint Paul, Kent County in 1939 to work in the King Mines at Coal Creek during the war years. After that he was employed in construction jobs in Fredericton, Mactaquac, and in the Grand Lake area. Following his retire

ment at age 65, he continued to work in his own woodlots and provided wood for local buyers.
