As a young man, Daniel joined the Canadian military, where he was deployed in Germany as a peacekeeper.

The military life allowed him to visit Paris and England.

After his return, he worked in the coal mines in Springhill as well as Construction and Ironworker building bridges.

In his later years he worked in Alberta as a house painter where he lived for 30 years.
